The 5th EMCA Workshop

10th - 14th March 2009

Turin, ITALY

During the 5th EMCA workshop in Turin (Italy), in all, 185 delegates from 36 countries participated.

The workshop was pleased to host three notable speakers, Dr Charles Mbogo (KEMRI, Kenya), Dr Major Dhillon (President, American Mosquito Control Association) and Dr Roberto Romi (National Health Service-ISS). Both Dr Mbogo & Major Dhillon
gave keynote talks about two very topical issues, the control of mosquito vectors in Sub-Saharan Africa and the impact of West Nile Virus in the USA. Dr Romi gave a talk on "Mosquitoes and medical entomology in Italy: Past, present and future of a neglected matter.

For the first time in the history of EMCA, a new session entitled Young Researchers

in Progress was held. This session provided students at different stages of their academic career with a platform to present their work. Oral and poster resentations were varied, covering a variety of vectors and areas of entomology. Congratulations to all those who participated, in particular Renita Danabalan (Natural History Museum, UK) and Elcin Eksi together to Gurbet Korkmaz (Haceteppe University, TK), who won awards for best oral and poster presentations.

Also a number of social events were held during the week including a social dinner, skiing excursion entitled 'mos-skiing' and tour of the city.

Another new feature of the EMCA 2009 workshop was the livestreaming facility, which enabled those with access to the internet to view the conference in 'real time' live on the web. A selection of oral presentations from the various sessions are available on the website www.zanzare.eu.
